A whale optimization algorithm with chaos mechanism based on quasi-opposition for global optimization problems

•A novel optimization algorithm for global called OBCWOA is proposed.•Chaos mechanism strengthen the optimization ability of the original WOA algorithm.•Quasi-opposition is used to avoid trapping into local optima.•The algorithm has fast convergence rate and achieves better solutions.
