Towards feature representation for steganalysis of spatial steganography

•The effects of spatial steganography on image statistical distribution are analyzed.•Feature separability analysis is conducted for both spatial and frequency features.•Two kinds of typical spatial features are improved based on the feature separability analysis.•Features of different types are merged to improve the steganalysis performance.
