Cryptopaper: digital information security for physical documents

Providing information security has been difficult in environments that rely on paper documents to implement business processes. Our work presents the design of a digital information security system for paper documents, called CryptoPaper, that uses 2-dimensional codes to represent data and its security properties on paper. A specially designed scanner system that uses image recognition techniques and a cloud-based access control system can display encoded data to authorized users. We present the design considerations that were explored for our prototype system and evaluation of its performance. We also discuss application scenarios for CryptoPaper, ranging from health care to human resources.
