LoadSense: Passively estimating cellular load

Mobile devices experience high fluctuations in data throughput over cellular networks such as 3G and LTE networks due to two key factors - link quality and cellular load. Communication during a low throughput period leads to increase in energy consumption for the data transfer. To address this problem, we designed LoadSense, a novel technique to passively estimate cellular load on a mobile device, and predict high and low throughput periods taking both link quality and cellular load into account. Mobile devices can leverage LoadSense to schedule communication during high throughput periods in order to reduce energy consumption. In this demo paper, we highlight the technical details of LoadSense and show how it works in real deployment settings.
